SPILL CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES
SPILLFIX UNIVERSAL ORGANIC FLOOR SWEEP

These spill clean-up procedures are provided in the absence of, however definitely do not replace, any current workplace procedures and policies.

Fast acting SpillFix Organic Floor Sweep must be applied in conjunction with the proper Spill Response equipment and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Only individuals with formal spill contents identification and clean-up training are qualified to determine the correct PPE and other spill response equipment. Do not atempt to clean-up any spill unless you can identify it and are trained in the right clean-up Safe Work Procedures. The workplace should contain a designated area with Safety Equipment.

Common Spills:

SpillFix treats many commonly used to absorb non-aggressive oils and water-based liquids such as fuels, oils and lubricants (animal, mineral vegetable or synthetic), hydraulic oils, cutting fluids and coolants. Can be used on inland and marine oil spills. SpillFix is suitable for mild chemical concentrates, cleaning concentrates, pesticides and herbicide spills.

Disposal:

Always dispose of in accordance with workplace, local, state, and federal regulations. SpillFix meets EPA leachate standards for hydrocarbons (C10 - C36).

Caution:

DO NOT USE this SpillFix on highly concentrated and volatile corrosives (acids and alkalis), volatile solvents, formaldehyde, and hazardous organic waste

Spill Procedures:

When encountering a spill you must first determine:

  1. What is the contaminant?
  2. Can I enter the area?
  3. Can I safely accomplish a useful purpose?
  4. Do I have the necessary product information (i.e. MSDS)?
  5. Do I have the required safety equipment and knowledge of appropriate procedures?

The following steps outline an appropriate and efficient approach to a spill.
Step 1 - Get Away
If a hazardous spill is discovered employees should move a safe distance away. Turn off ignition sources and equipment if possible.
Step 2 - Identify what you saw
Accurately describe what you have just seen. What was it? Was it a solid, liquid or gas? Where was it? Was it raining? Did it have a familiar odour?
Step 3 - Get Help
Follow company procedures. Notify the key contact immediately and report the details of the spill.
Step 4 - Hazard assessment
Determine the hazards by obtaining the Material Safety Data Sheets, read labels, identifying signs or Transportation of Dangerous Goods placards. If this becomes necessary responders should assume the worst and use the highest level of personal protection equipment.
Step 5 - Alert others and evacuate unnecessary personnel
Step 6 - Secure the area and establish spill boundary
Step 7 - Prepare a plan of action
After the hazard has been identified, the team should prepare an action plan. They should consider environmental conditions such as wind direction, potential for rain, what might happen on site. Prepare for emergency vehicle access.
Step 8 - Secure proper equipment and materials
Establish levels of personal protection equipment required by determining potential hazards. Choose equipment such as spark proof tools if flammable liquids are involved.
Step 9 - Establish decontamination and first aid stations
Establish decontamination procedures in the event that someone is injured. Arrange for medical assistance and support if necessary. Material Safety Data sheets will provide health and medical data for the hazardous material.
Step 10 - Contain the spill
The goal is to limit the spread of contaminant and thus maximize safety and minimize liability costs.
Step 11 - Clean up the spill
The goal here is to limit the spread of contamination, remove contaminant from protective clothing before removal, and clean equipment. Absorbents used to clean up the spill are often classified as hazardous waste. Absorbed materials have the same properties as the spill material. Absorbents must be properly packaged for disposal according to municipal, provincial and federal regulations.
Step 12 - Investigate and evaluate
The cause of the accident needs to be investigated and evaluated to prevent further occurrences. Evaluate your plan to determine if improvements are necessary. Build these improvements into the quarterly spill accident exercises. Replenish all supplies immediately

Directions For Use:

  1. Do not attempt to clean-up spill unless formerly trained.
  2. Identify the type of spill to determine the correct cleaning procedure. If unsure, call authorities: Site Safety Officer, Fire Brigade or Police.
  3. Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, gown/apron, protective eyewear, and facemask. Do not handle spill fluid or absorbed material.
  4. Control access to area. Prevent people from walking through affected area. Isolate spill and erect appropriate warning signs and/or barracades. Cordon off spill area with caution tape if present in spill kit.
  5. Eliminate all sources of ignition and ensure that there is adequate ventilation.
  6. If safe to do so, right any uprighted containers where the spill originated, do not handle fluid even with nitrile gloves.
  7. If the spill is migrating to a drain or causing a more hazardous situation then lay SpillFix Universal Organic Boom in front any migrating. If you do not have a boom then apply SpillFix Universal Organic Absorbent in an arc in it the leading point of the migrating liquid.
  8. Take SpillFix to the spill and liberally apply around the perimeter of the spill and then work it toward the centre. Continue to apply until there is no free liquid visable or liquid migration.
  9. Don’t handle spilled material until adsorption is complete. Ensure you use spark proof clean-up equipment if flammable liquids are involved.
  10. Using a suitable scoop/scraper or broom and pan, work SpillFix into the spill before sweeping into pan/scoop.
  11. Spill may require a light dusting and sweep to remove final surface residue.
  12. Place all absorbed waste into a suitably identified bag/container. Use a thick walled, puncture proof plastic bag or leak proof cardboard box if broken glass or other sharp objects are present in spill area. Do not seal bag.
  13. Clean brush/scoop and pan before relacing. If gloves or any other PPE, or spill control equipment has contacted spill, either wash and sterilise or place in disposal.
  14. Dispose of waste in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. Assure conformity with all applicable regulations. When used to absorb hazardous substance(s) treat as per that/those substance(s). Refer to waste management authority for disposal regulations for biological waste or pickup advice.
  1. Wash your hands with soap and water.
